Tammikuu / January
Tammikuu on aurinkokuukausi!
Ei siksi, että sitä näkyisi erityisen paljon, mutta siksi, että se palaa kaamoksen jälkeen!
Tammikuulla on toinenkin erityispiirre, nimittäin helmiäispilvet ( https://www.ursa.fi/ilmakeha/ilmiot/helmiaispilvet...

January is a sun month! Not because you would see it a lot, but because it comes back after polar night season!
January has another special thing as well. They are called pearly clouds (Polar stratospheric
cloud) You can’t see them every year, but when you do you know you have experienced
something special.
January is also lovely mix of polar night and light. In the night time northern lights appear and during the day, excitement will the sun show up also this year?
Really you can see the sun on about 17th of january. Day is not accurate, it depends on where You try to see it.
Funny thing is that people come from the other side of the border, Skibotn, to see the sun in Kilpisjärvi.
When it appears here, it is still behind the mountains there.

Helmikuu / February
Helmikuu on pakkaskuu.
* * * * * * *
February is a frosty month.
Amount of daylight increases day by day.
Yet it is still cold at the village. Weekly daylight time is increasing with
10 minutes. Even though sun is already up, lovely and intensive colors are still
playing around sunrise and sunset. Chances to see the northern lights are good.
February is not dream month for hikers, but first ones are arriving.
They are starting their way towards highest point of Finland, fell Halti (1324
m). In February, it is very important to listen to and respect nature, cause it
has amazingly big power.

Maaliskuu / March
Maaliskuussa kevät on jo aika lähellä ja aurinko voi lämmittääkin.
Valoa riittää. Myös yöt ovat valoisia, erityisesti kun on pakkasta ja taivas on pilvetön.
Tunturit kutsuvat vaeltajia, varsinkin kuun loppu puolella. On kuitenkin syytä muistaa, että kevät on Käsivarren erämaassa vasta aluillaan ja usein maaliskuussa saattaa tulla suurimmat lumimäärät, toki lumentulo jatkuu usein vielä huhtikuussakin.

April is normally end of the winter.
But during 2022 it was something else! In Easter time village was tested by a week long snowfall. I can say, that really made a human humble.
In april weather can have many faces. Lenght of daylight is 14 hours! Sun is warming and snow starts to melt. In april it is normal to have
1meter of snow and ice.
About last part of april nearby Kilpisjärvi, it is possible to see one obvious sight of springtime: swans. They arrive
at the same time as first places with open water.

May is end of winter season in Kilpisjärvi. At the village there are ice-fishing competitions on first weekend of May. When competition ends in Sunday afternoon, whole village gets empty. This is time for locals to have a little break.
We have daylight over 19 hours, no darkness at all. Snow is melting fast.
In Norway, Skibotn (first village after the border, 55km from Kilpisjärvi) You can already see fresh green colour. Nature is starting to grow. This we have to wait a bit longer in Kilpisjärvi.

At the end of the month, treas start to have leaves, You can see tiny green colour.
Other places in Finland, midsummer festivities are considered to be festival of the middle of the summer, best part of the summer.
In Kilpisjärvi, it is beginning of summer. Part of midsummer festivities in Kilpisjärvi is cross-country skiing competition. It has been held for decades.

Heinäkuu / July
Heinäkuu on matkailun ja retkeilijöiden kulta- aikaa.
Kesä Kilpisjärvellä ja sen läheisyydessä on parhaimmillaan. Erämaassa kesä on alussa. Norjassa olosuhteet ovat hyvin erilaiset kuin Kilpisjärvellä ja nämä kaksi maata onkin järkevää yhdistää lomaa suunniteltaessa.

July is very popular month among tourist. Travellers and hikers are arriving.
In the wilderness, July is beginning of the summer. Some lakes can still have ice cover and there can be big floods.
Normally July is month with mosquitos. Luckily we don’t have so much of those in Kilpisjärvi. From that, we can thank wind.
July is best growing season in nature! Did You knew, that annual growing time in Kilpisjärvi is about 100 days?

Elokuu / August
* * * * * * *
August is still warm, but slowly it starts to be a bit dark in the evening. Not so many guests at the village and no more mosquitos. First autumn colours arrive at the end of month. Also first northern lights appear.

Syyskuu / September
* * * * * * *
September
Month with so many colours! Do You know, what makes autumn colours (ruska in our language) so special in Kipisjärvi? Well, we don’t have
pinetrees, so this means, that whole nature is changing colours. This looks absolutely amazing! September is also very nice time to see northern lights.
Rather often fell Saana gets it’s first snow in September.
This normally stays only for very short time, but it shows us direction..
Towards winter we go.

Lokakuu / October
* * * * * * *
October could be called as a hidden treasure in Kilpisjärvi. No one is having their holiday here in that time. YET, it is very beautiful month.
At the beginning of month it can be rather warm, but end of month snow has surely reached the ground. We can still have some autumn colours, expecially on the ground. We have northern lights, we have reflections from the northern lights in open waters. We have possibilites to walk all around, but yet, we can feel winter is approaching. Colours on the sky are bit simular as they
are in polar night season.
October is definately one of the light months! Daylight we have for over 10 hours

Marraskuu / November
* * * * * * *
November is month when daylight decreases over 1 hour every week. Then about 25th of November polar night season reaches Kilpisjärvi. Well, You don’t have to be afraid, it is not total darkness, it is blueish time. It is beautiful, when rich and intense colours from rising and setting sun, fill up the sky. Only thing we are not able to see, is the sun. Snow arrives and world is really calm. It looks as nature is resting under a white comfortable blanket.
Many people ask from us, how bad is the polar night season. How do You cope with it? Well, You can deside Yourself by looking at the pictures, is the polar night season so bad and dark?
